Kentucky Oaks Mall honored by PETA

MCCRACKEN COUNTY – The parent company of Kentucky Oaks Mall is being recognized for its effort to make visitors aware of the risk hot cars pose to people and animals.

On August 10, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals honored the Cafaro Company with its Compassionate Business Award for a signage and social media campaign addressing the topic.

“Temperatures inside a parked car can reach deadly heights in just minutes, and an unexpected delay can turn a ‘quick errand’ into a tragedy for a dog or child left behind,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “By answering PETA’s call for warning signs, Cafaro is helping to prevent vulnerable family members from enduring terrible heatstroke deaths.”

Based in Niles, Ohio, the Cafaro organization is one of the nation’s largest privately-held shopping center developers. Founded by the late William M. Cafaro in the 1940s, the firm is now in its seventh decade and third generation as a family-owned and managed business.

Thank you for 40 years

On the morning of August 15, 1980, an excited crowd gathered inside a new and unusual building just south of the city limits of Fredericksburg, Virginia.  They were there to take part in the Grand Opening for a new shopping center called Spotsylvania Mall.  They came in to enjoy the festivities, musical entertainment and refreshments, not to mention a respite from the heat in the climate controlled environment.  They took advantage of grand opening sales in stores like Leggett’s, Montgomery Ward, JCPenney, Sears and dozens of new, smaller shops.

Much has changed since then.  The shopping complex would later be completely renovated and renamed Spotsylvania Towne Centre. It would grow by nearly a half-million square feet to accommodate new stores, a hotel, a theater/entertainment complex and an open-air shopping district known as The Village. This year, Spotsylvania Towne Centre celebrates its 40th Anniversary.  To commemorate this milestone, the mall is offering a “thank you” gift to its many loyal guests:  A $40 Mall Gift Card with the purchase of at least $250 at stores on the complex.  To claim this gift, customers should bring their receipts dated September 1 to September 30, from any combination of merchants, to the Customer Service Center.

Spotsylvania Towne Centre has been serving the people of northern Virginia since 1980.  It is located at the junction of Interstate 95 and Route 3, near Fredericksburg.  The 1.7 million square foot complex offers more than 120 department stores, specialty shops, restaurants, hotels and entertainment venues.  For more information, log onto www.spotsylvaniatownecentre.com.  Spotsylvania Towne Centre is owned and managed as part of the Cafaro family of companies, based in Niles, Ohio.  One of the nation’s largest privately held shopping center developers, the Cafaro organization has developed and managed more than 30 million square feet of commercial real estate in 14 states.  For more information, visit online at www.cafarocompany.com.
